At the northernmost point of the Appalachian Trail in Baxter State Park, Katahdin is the highest peak in Maine at 5,267 feet.

Baxter State Park used to regulate winter hiking, but they loosened the rules up a few years ago making it easier for climbers to get into the park for a winter ascent up Katahdin. The trail itself is like all the others, steep. Reservations for winter climbing on Katahdin should be made as soon as possible in the fall in order to obtain space and meet park permit guidelines.

Katahdin’s north face, which forms the main wall of the South Basin cirque, is riddled with highly technical rock and ice routes reaching more than 2,200 vertical feet, from the sheltered pond to the Knife Edge.
The shortest route to the summit is nearly 8 miles roundtrip while other routes are more than 10 miles.
