Initial plans for the S-80 Class submarine were brought forward in 1989, with preliminary studies conducted until 1991. Following a split between the two companies, Scorpène submarines are now solely marketed by DCNS and considered a French design. The Scorpène class submarine is a class of diesel-electric submarine jointly developed by DCNS of France and the Spanish company Navantia. They were decommissioned with the end of the Cold War after a short length of service in the Royal Navy.

Construction was carried out by ASC, formerly the Australian Submarine Corporation, in Adelaide, South Australia, although the bow and escape tower sections of the first submarine were built in Sweden. The sixth Dolphin Class submarine was ordered in March 2012 and is yet to be named.
