…harder to setup in windy conditions and the design is intrinsically less aerodynamic…..which is why I guess Henry put an extra guy out loop on each side of the shelter.
Love the shelter, like most other HSTT, it's light, bug-proof, easy to pitch and has ample space inside, but I've always had a few issues with it .

To summarize; Protrail is better in every way except in dealing with wind. Question. Appropriate for use in arid and more humid forested environments, the ProTrail is easy to pitch and has modest footprint requirements, making it easy to find wild, stealth campsites to set it up. Close. The TarpTent Contrail is a good single-wall shelter that provides rain and bug protection. The Contrail is the third new tent introduction from Tarptent in 2006.
For me the Moment DW fills all my needs but if I did a long trail the PROTRAIL … Buyer pays PP fee.
Tarptent Contrail at sunrise in the De-na-zin Badlands Wilderness Area, New Mexico. Decisions: Tarptent Protrail vs Six Moon Lunar Solo LE?
The ProTrail has attachments for (and ships with) an apex guyline to strengthen the ridgeline. There seems to be a ton of interest in this tent, which is the successor to the very popular TT Contrail, and an extreme dearth of in-depth reviews.
His reasoning is the Protrail is stuffable and the poles break down to a shorter package. Had a chance to test this out yesterday during a fairly solid rainstorm in Shenandoah National Park. I have no experience with the contrail but the protrail seems like it will shed wind and snow better than the contrail could. Haven't backpacked in over 15 years (been too long!)
I'm 6'6 so looking for a good amount of length. and I've decided to get re-outfitted this year for a few trips in Minnesota and New Mexico along with more ambitious plans to thru hike the first half of next summer, perhaps in Europe (I teach in Spain every summer), once I dial everything in.
Complete protection comes from sewn-in bug netting and a SilNylon bathtub floor.
Does this Tarptent accommodate tall people (over 6 ft 3 in / 190.5 cm)? I use the Contrail which was the predecessor to the protrail.
